St. Luke’s Education Committee Report
St. Luke’s has ventured in new directions in education this year under Rev. Patty’s guidance. In addition to our on-going Bible Study and Book Study, Patty added The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd for the youngest members of our congregation. Rooted in the Bible, this is a Montessori-inspired approach to the religious formation of children. Please make sure to visit the "atrium" above the kitchen in the Parish Hall. Here, our youngest gather in a room specially prepared for them. Many thanks to our volunteers who helped create this sacred space!
With the help of Joe Mouer, Kathy Brightbill, Beth Savage, and Ginny Hunneke, our elementary students explored their faith through many avenues. Modern media played a role as the boys discovered Christian values in the context of The Lord of the Rings with Joe. Beth guided the children in the discovery of Saints and in the writing, direction, and a performance of a play about St. Stephen. We are currently exploring ways to bring continuity to the elementary curriculum and hope to hire an educator to work with our children on a regular basis.
This fall brought many new faces to St. Luke’s for the nine-week series on Mysticism in Major World Religions: Conscious Contact as the Common Thread. This course explored various approaches to experiencing the joy and inspiration of connection with the Divine through the perspectives of Kabbalah, Sufism, and Christianity. Designed to facilitate better understanding of each other through compassion and a common desire to achieve conscious contact with God, this course provided an overview of practices that transcend religious differences. Led by Rev. Kythera Ann (Kabbalah), Dr. John Johnson (Sufism), and Rev. Liz Canham (Christianity), these classes included lecture and discussion.
A new gathering for those interested in Spiritual Formation and Mysticism will meet on Wednesday, January 9 at 9:30 A.M. Future dates will be determined to accommodate the needs of the members. Guided meditation, journaling and discussion of personal experiences and expressions of spirituality will be just a few of the topics explored by this group.
Please contact Rev. Patty or a Vestry member if you have any questions or suggestions for Christian Education at St. Luke’s.
